What is European Solidarity Corps?

The European Solidarity Corps is a European Union initiative which creates opportunities for young people (aged 18-30) to volunteer or work in projects that benefit communities and people around Europe. OBJECTIVES The European Solidarity Corps aims to enhance the engagement of young people and organisations in accessible and high-quality solidarity activities, thereby strengthening cohesion, solidarity, democracy and citizenship in Europe, while also responding to societal challenges and strengthening communities, with a particular focus on promoting social inclusion.

European Solidarity Corps volunteering activities are open to youth organisations and to individual young people (aged 18-30) residing in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

Individual volunteering lets young people participate in the daily work of organisations and lasts between 2 and 12 months, and in some cases, 2 weeks and up. Participants can volunteer abroad or in their country of residence for projects covering social inclusion, environment, culture, and more.

Volunteering teams are groups of 10-40 young people from at least two different countries who volunteer together for a period of between 2 weeks and 2 months. The costs of accommodation and food are covered. Participants also receive a small allowance for personal expenses. Volunteering can take place in a broad range of areas, such as in the fields of environmental protection, climate change mitigation and greater social inclusion. It does not include activities that are part of curricula in formal education, vocational education and training systems and activities for emergency response, and must not interfere with the functioning of the labour market. For more information, see the list of the project types.

As of the end of 2018, the European Solidarity Corps is the main EU programme providing volunteering opportunities for young people. The Corps builds on the success of the previous European Voluntary Service.
